I like to know how things work, so when something catches
my fancy, I like to learn how to do it so, one day I can do it myself.
A major area of interest for me was computer programming. So, I thought
I'd pick up Greg Perry's book, "Teach Yourself Beginning Programming
in 24 Hours (2nd Edition)." Oddly enough, there aren't many books
out there like this, that I could find anyway.
The book was pretty good, really. It's up-to-date, and, for the most part,
written in a language that can be understood by anyone who is relatively
familiar with computers. The first chapter (or hour, as is the format
for the "24 Hours" series) is a good start where, right off
the bat, you're able to type in and run an actual working program. The
next 10 chapters discuss several topics such as different programming
techniques, the importance of good design, debugging your code, and my
favorite chaper: advanced programming issues. Here's where I was able
to create a program that really looked like commercial software.
The section on Java can be skipped. To me, it didn't make much sense,
even with repeated reading.
The remaining chapters deal with Visual Basic, C, C++, the Internet, and
the mysterious .NET technology being developed by Microsoft.
The final section, "The Business of Programming" is an interesting
glimpse into the world of software and the different jobs involved in
creating software.
If you want a good launching point and introduction to the world of programming,
grab yourself a copy of this book.
