on Stephanie McIntyre
Owner of E Sales Unlimited
Background ~ Stephanie McIntyre
Stephanie McIntyre left a distinguished career as an IT
professional to become a advocate for technical literacy with urban young
people. It was there she became familiar with raising money for her community
tech organization with Ebay. Ms. McIntyre now makes a full time living
on Ebay and she has obtained the coveted Platinum Ebay Seller Status.
Selling well on Ebay is a time and labor intensive job however, Stephanie
was gracious enough to grant me a couple of hours, to give me the inside
track on selling on the Internet's number one marketplace Ebay.
I feel many people who are trying to sell online need to
seriously consider Ebay as an option to create an independent source of
Income.
The Interview
Kamau:Where did you grow up and go to school?
Stephanie: I went to
Brooklyn College in Brooklyn NY and Regents College in Albany NY. I also
attended Rutgers Graduate School of Education.
Kamau: What inspired you to consider doing business
on the Internet?
Stephanie: I was in
IT for many years as an Independent IT Consultant for Fortune 500 companies
and it was a natural leap to the Internet from there.
Kamau: When did you decide to try Ebay as a way
to sell your products and services?
Stephanie: About two
years ago. I had left the corporate arena to start a nonprofit community
technology center in Perth Amboy NJ, called
TechnoTots. We had very little funding and I used Ebay to bolster our
finances.
Kamau: At what point did you discover that Ebay
was a viable sales channel for your business?
Stephanie: When I began
to make quite a bit of money on my auctions.
Kamau: How did you discover the secrets for effectively
selling on Ebay?
Stephanie: All I learned
by trial and error.
Kamau: Why is Ebay such a successful sales environment
for a small or minority business to consider?
Stephanie: Because
of the very low overhead and fast capital turnaround. You can launch an
auction on Sunday and literally be counting the money on Wednesday.
Kamau: I understand that the Ebay sales environment
is very competitive and complex, is this true?
Stephanie: It is highly
competitive but the playing field is extremely level. Everyone really
has an equal opportunity to make money.
Kamau: What type of products are most successful
on Ebay?
Stephanie: Collectibles
and clothing are the top two major categories.
Kamau: Do service orientated businesses have any
success selling on Ebay?
Stephanie: I believe
that they can, but they need to be creative in their approach and really
study the marketplace.
Kamau: How does your Ebay course help Black, minority,
and small business understand and navigate within the complex Ebay sales
environment?
Stephanie: By explaining
step by step how to sell on Ebay using a product line that has been extremely
successful for me.
Kamau: What future developments and opportunities
do you see on the horizon for business people considering using Ebay to
sell their products and
services?
Stephanie: I think
the sky is the limit for using Ebay because the low overhead and profitability
cannot be easily matched my traditional brick and mortar businesses.
